Maruti Swift CNG, Dzire CNG spotted testing, launch soon

The CNG-fitted models expected to feature no changes in the engine and transmission options

India’s largest passenger carmaker Maruti Suzuki is all prepared to launch the CNG avatars of its highest selling cars – Swift and Dzire – in India. The spy shots surfaced lately suggest that the Swift hatchback and Dzire sedan are being tested with emission testing kits. The launch will be targeted towards buyers, who are troubled with the ever increasing fuel prices, and seek a frugal car for their family. Both the siblings are expected to retain the same 1.2-litre Dual Jet petrol powertrains.

Since the BS-6 emission norms came into force in April last year, Maruti has offered sole petrol models across its line-up.The Swift CNG and Dzire CNG will witness the addition only in the fuel department, whereas no other tweaks or feature upgradation is anticipated. The CNG convenience will be offered in lower variants of both the cars. With CNG loaded on its back, the Swift will compete against Hyundai Grand i10 Nios CNG, while Dzire CNG will lock horns with soon to be launched Tata Tigor CNG.

Currently, there are six car models in Maruti Suzuki’s portfolio that come fitted with CNG kit. The addition of these two will take the tally to eight, making Maruti the leader in CNG-kitted car models.

The 1.2-litre Dual Jet engine of Swift and Dzire gives out 90PS of max power and 113Nm of max torque. It is coupled with a choice 5-speed MT and AMT gearbox choices. But with CNG kit on, the transmission option is expected to be restricted to sole 5-speed manual gearbox choice. Moreover, under full CNG mode drive the output figures could see a drop.

At present, the likes of S-Presso, Celerio, and Ertiga feature CNG with their VXi trims. The Swift and Dzire are likely to follow the similar pattern. Therefore, the CNG variants of Swift and Dzire will be same as petrol-driven VXi variants and hence, would be equipped with features  such as a 4-speaker music system, steering-mounted audio and calling controls, keyless entry and others.
