How to repair a tubeless tyre puncture?

Flat tyres are a common sight on the roads. Every driver should know how to fix a tyre puncture.

Punctured tyres can be troublesome at times. In the case of a tubeless tyre, you will be able to drive home even when it’s punctured. However, if you are stuck in the middle of a highway or off-road where you see minimal chances of reaching home with punctured tyres, you need to fix the tyres yourself.

You should have the proper knowledge to fix the puncture and come out of any untoward circumstances. You need to carry the right puncture repair toolkit and follow the below step-by-step instructions to set your car rolling again.

Tools you will need

  • Lug wrench – For removing lug nuts
  • Jack stand – For jacking up the car
  • Pliers - For extracting the object causing puncture
  • Smoothening tool - For smoothening out the sides of the puncture strip
  • Puncture Repair strips - For filling the puncture hole
  • Puncture Strip Insertion Tool
  • Knife or Blade - To cut off excess strip protruding out

Steps you need to follow:

  • Locate a safe spot, make sure it is a concrete and plain surface
  • Now loosen the lug nuts by using a lug wrench
  • Time to jack up the car, use a jack stand and remove the wheels
  • First, extract the nail or the sharp object from the tyre using the pliers
  • Insert the smoothening tool and then take it out. Repeat these a few times so that the puncture hole has enough space to accommodate the repair strip.
  • Insert the smoothening tool and leave it half-inserted
  • Now, take a puncture repair strip and insert it into the puncture repair tool and keep inserting until its halfway through
  • Now take the smoothening tool out of the tyre and start inserting the puncture repair tool (with strip inside)
  • Keep pushing until around 10mm of the repair strip is left.
  • Take out the puncture repair tool slowly and you will see the strip is automatically removed. It is because of the slit present at the bottom of the repair tool.
  • Now, trim the remaining strip which is protruding out of the tyre
  • Voila! The puncture is fixed.

Place the wheel back in its original position and tightly screw it with the wheel nuts. Now, lower the car from the jack carefully. But before you are all set to go, just check the tyre by filling it up to the recommended pressure level and observe whether any leak persists.
