When your tyres get old or in case you have a puncture , you may need to change your car tyre your self.

Please use safety equipment like gloves and goggles to protect yourself.

Ideally you should call an expert to do this , but in case you are stuck in someplace where you cannot get help to change your car tyre , then use the information below as a guide to change car tyres.

You will need to place the car on a surface that is dry and solid , with some level of traction. Make sure the car is leveled in a way that it is not tilting dangerously on any side and is not slipping or rolling or moving.

An empty parking space is ideal , but if you are on a road, please take the car to a spot which is away from the traffic and also put your parking lights or hazard lights on.

A lot of cars come with a hazard triangle , please place that at a slight distance from the point where you will be working , so that oncoming traffic can see the light reflected from the hazard triangle.

1: Press the hand brake.Use a stone or piece of wood to wedge the surface between the road and the tyres so that the car does not roll when you are putting pressure to remove the nuts.You should wedge all the tyres that are in contact with the road.

2: Take out the spare wheel from the boot and keep it near the car in a space near the tyre that needs to be changed.You can even place the spare tyre between the car tyres beneath the chassis , so that in case the car is unstable and comes off the jack , it will be supported by the spare tyre.

3:Take a wheel spanner which comes as standard equipment with your car and loosen the nuts upto say 80% to 90% of the rings on the bolts.This is so that the wheel of the damaged, punctured tyre does not simply fall off without you controlling it's dismounting.

4 :You need to place the car jack to lift the car.Most car manuals have the details of where to place a car jack. Some even have the spot marked with a plastic frame surrounding the metal - on the chassis /under body of the car.

Usually this space is next to the tyre which is being changed.

5:Follow the car owner's manual , in case you don't have one , please use your phone to search for it on the internet. DO NOT GET ANY PART OF YOUR BODY UNDER THE CAR AT ANY POINT OF THIS WHOLE PROCESS. DO NOT HIT THE CAR JACK OR DO ANYTHING (LIKE SITTING INSIDE THE CAR , SHUTTING THE BOOT or DIKKI) ,TO MAKE THE CAR UNSTABLE.

6:Place the car jack at the appropriate spot to open the 4 nuts which connect the wheel to the body of the car.

You need to just lift the car enough to dismount the wheel and then mount the wheel , in most cases 4 to 6 inches is enough.

Remember to place the wheel nuts in a safe place- loosing even one of them will create a safety issue.

7:Remove the damaged tyre , punctured tyre off the brake drum area and place it horizontally, so that it does not roll away.

8: Take the spare wheel with the spare/new tyre and place it on the wheel assembly on the car body and place the nuts on the bolts , lightly screwing all four of them - so that the wheel does not fall off the car body.Now tighten the nuts with the wheel spanner. The sequence of tightening the nuts should be criss cross , not one on side of the other.

9: Unwind the car jack and let the car rest on the ground.Now tighten the wheel nuts to the maximum possible uptill you are satisfied that the nuts are not getting unscrewed by applying pressure with your fingers or applying minor pressure with the wheel changer spanner.

10: Put the punctured , damaged wheel, the car jack, owner manual, hazard triangle and all the other items used in changing the tyre , in the appropriate spaces inside the car.Remove the wooden wedges or the stone from the wheels.

You are ready to move now - Start the car and drive at a slow speed to check for any abnormal behaviour or instability.

In case you do not feel any such thing , then drive within speed limits or 40 to 50 KMPH till you reach a point where you can get the puncture fixed or buy a new tyre.

You can keep your hazard lights on while driving the car in this situation to warn other drivers to be careful.
